AVRPRO-REVIEW Essential Glossary: Tech Review Apps

A

App Store Optimization (ASO)

The process of improving an app's visibility within an app marketplace by refining its title, keywords, screenshots, and description. Higher visibility typically leads to more organic downloads.

B

Battery Benchmark

A standardized test that measures how long a device's battery lasts under defined usage conditions such as screen-on time or continuous video playback. Results allow direct comparisons across different devices.

Beta Version

A pre-release build of an app made available to a limited audience for testing before the official public launch. Beta versions may contain bugs or incomplete features.

Build Quality

An assessment of the physical construction of a device, including materials used, structural rigidity, and finish consistency. It is commonly evaluated in hardware-focused tech reviews.

C

Changelog

A documented record of all additions, fixes, and removals made between successive versions of an app or software. Reviewing changelogs helps users understand what has changed before updating.

CPU Performance

A measure of how efficiently and quickly a device's central processing unit executes tasks, often evaluated through benchmark scores and real-world app tests. It directly affects app loading speed and multitasking capability.

D

Display Refresh Rate

The number of times per second a screen updates its image, expressed in hertz (Hz). A higher refresh rate generally produces smoother scrolling and animations within apps.

F

Frame Rate (FPS)

The number of individual frames rendered per second in a video or interactive application, such as a game. Higher frame rates result in smoother visual output and are a key metric in app performance reviews.

G

GPU Benchmark

A test that measures a device's graphics processing unit performance by running standardized graphical workloads. Results indicate how well the device handles visually demanding apps and games.

I

In-App Purchase (IAP)

A transaction made within an already-installed app to unlock additional content, features, or subscriptions. Reviewers often evaluate whether IAPs are necessary for core functionality or are purely optional.

L

Latency

The delay between a user's input and the app's or device's response, typically measured in milliseconds. Low latency is critical for gaming, real-time communication, and interactive applications.

M

Micro-stuttering

Brief, irregular pauses in an app's animation or video playback that disrupt the perceived smoothness even when the average frame rate appears acceptable. It is identified during hands-on performance testing.

P

Permissions

Access rights that an app requests from the operating system, such as access to the camera, microphone, or location data. Reviewers assess whether requested permissions are proportionate to the app's stated functionality.

Privacy Policy

A legal document that explains what user data an app collects, how it is stored, and with whom it is shared. Evaluating the privacy policy is a standard step in comprehensive app reviews.

R

RAM Management

The way a device or operating system allocates and frees random-access memory among running apps. Poor RAM management can cause apps to reload frequently or crash under multitasking conditions.

Review Score

A numerical or categorical rating assigned to an app or device by a reviewer after systematic evaluation of defined criteria. Scores enable quick comparisons but should be read alongside the full review for context.

S

SDK (Software Development Kit)

A collection of tools, libraries, and documentation that developers use to build applications for a specific platform or service. The SDKs an app uses can affect its performance, size, and data-sharing behavior.

Sideloading

The practice of installing an app on a device from a source other than the official app marketplace, typically using an installation file. Reviewers may test sideloaded apps to evaluate features unavailable in official store versions.

T

Thermal Throttling

An automatic reduction in processor speed triggered when a device reaches a high temperature, intended to prevent hardware damage. It can cause noticeable performance drops during extended app sessions.

U

UI (User Interface)

The visual and interactive elements through which a user operates an app, including buttons, menus, icons, and layout. UI quality is a primary criterion in usability-focused app reviews.

Update Frequency

How often a developer releases new versions of an app to add features, fix bugs, or address security vulnerabilities. Consistent update cadence is generally considered a positive indicator of developer support.

UX (User Experience)

The overall impression and ease of use a person has when interacting with an app, encompassing navigation flow, responsiveness, and accessibility. UX evaluation goes beyond visual design to assess how intuitive the app feels in practice.

V

Version Number

A numeric or alphanumeric identifier assigned to a specific release of an app, following conventions such as major.minor.patch. Version numbers help users and reviewers track changes and confirm which build is being evaluated.

W

Wearable Integration

The capability of a mobile or desktop app to connect and exchange data with wearable devices such as smartwatches or fitness trackers. Reviewers assess integration quality by testing synchronization accuracy and feature completeness.
